Take a peek behind the scenes with sports gambling industry executives, innovators, sportsbooks operators, and sponsors regarding the innovations of the sports and sports wagering worlds. Key stakeholders share their experiences working in the business and their visions of where these complementary industries may develop in the future.
Students will reflect on some of the key partnerships between sports wagering entities and teams and leagues as well as the crucial moments in the sports gambling world that were deeply affected by COVID-19 developments. Together we consider the shared experiences, reports, advice, and insights surrounding innovation in the sports and wagering industries to determine its effect on you and your stakeholders.
Courses can be taken in any order, but it's recommended to start with 101 and then move on to 201 and 301. Complete all 3 courses and acquire a Master Certificate from OU’s AECOM Center for Sports Administration.
SGE301: “Analyzing Sports Gambling Integrity Challenges” is divided into 5 modules focusing on a number of topics that discuss innovations and insights from various stakeholders across the legalized sports gambling landscape: Guest lecturers include Ohio University alumni Basil DeVito (XFL, WWE, Breeders Cup & NBA), U.S. Integrity SVP & Head of Business Development Steve Pastorino, and US Bookmaking Director of Sports Book Operations Robert Walker.
Ohio University’s Director of Sports Gambling Education, Jim Kahler, sits down with Basil Devito. Basil has served as President of the XFL, a member of the WWE Board of Directors, Director of Marketing for the Indiana Pacers, and started his sports industry career as an intern under former NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle. Together they discuss how legalized sports wagering fit into XFL innovation, embracing mobile & social opportunities, and in-game wagering exclusivity.
Matt Cacciato brings 20+ years of experience from the cable sports television industry to Ohio University's distinguished Department of Sports Administration and now to the Sports Gambling Education program. His past experiences include roles within ESPN, Fox Sports, and the Yankees YES Network. Matt sits down with Basil Devito to discuss how TV and media address the new opportunities of sponsorship, partnerships, and promotions with legalized sports gambling. They also discuss at length the various opportunities and challenges facing various sport leagues across the US.
Ohio University’s Director of Sports Gambling Education, Jim Kahler, sits down with Basil Devito to discuss various ways to grow from the legalized sports gambling market. Topics of discussion include promoting and monetizing buckets, learning from each other, knowing customers and content, and breaking into the vertical.
Steve Pastorino is SVP & Head of Business Development at U.S. Integrity. As the first point of contact for USI’s current and prospective customers, Pastorino leads sales and customer relationship management, new partnerships, and guides long-term growth efforts. He has led sales and strategic partnerships at the Oakland A's (MLB), Real Salt Lake and Chicago Fire (MLS), and Las Vegas Lights FC (USL). In this module, Steve discusses sports betting trends during the pandemic, growth and innovation, new partnerships for teams and media, what new players and stakeholders emerged in the landscape, and best practices for establishing new sponsorship deals.
This module is led by Robert Walker, Director of Sports Book Operations of U.S. Bookmaking. He has over 30 years of experience in managing sports book wagering lines and risk. Prior to joining USB, Mr. Walker ran several of Nevada’s largest sports books including The Mirage, Bellagio, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay for the MGM corporation and the Stardust for Boyd Gaming. Robert leads discussions on his background and experience in sportsbooks, evolution and change in the emerging landscape, entrepreneurship and career paths, and trends and opportunities in legalized sports wagering.
